The DBR and its Self-Conception
The German Disability Council (DBR) is formed by all the important associations of disabled and chronically ill people as an alliance for action representing more than 2.5 million people affected by handicaps in Germany. One of the tasks of the German Disability Council is to fight for the interests of disabled and chronically ill people and their relatives, thus surpassing the possibilities and limits of a specific association. This also means to make sure that the prevailing financial conditions become good enough to enable the disabled and chronically people and their relatives to design their life in a satisfactory manner and that the work of the necessary services and self-help structures is assured. The German Disability Council is an alliance for action composed by the most influential associations of and for chronically ill and disabled people and sees itself as a platform for common action and an exchange of experiences. It is no umbrella organization and therefore does not possess a general mandate of representation. The member associations maintain their autonomy and as a rule represent their interests themselves. The German Disability Council advocates the interests of handicapped people at international level and is a member of the European Disability Forum.
